MODESTO BEE

— A memorial service will be held Saturday for Larry Shimel, a special-education teacher at Modesto High and the head football coach at Big Valley Christian, who died Sept. 25 from an apparent heart attack.

The service will begin at 10 a.m. at Big Valley Grace Community Church, 4040 Tully Road.

A lifelong Modesto resident, Shimel served as an assistant coach at Modesto Junior College, Davis, Livingston, Atwater and Downey high schools and was the head coach at four high schools — Hughson, Modesto, Modesto Christian and Big Valley Christian, the only coach in the program's nine-year history.

Shimel graduated from Davis High School in 1973 and then graduated from Modesto Junior College and California State University, Stanislaus.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Shimel's memory be given to the Big Valley School tuition assistance program. The school's address is 4040 Tully Road, Modesto, CA 95356.

Big Valley Christian and Modesto high schools will hold a joint tribute to Shimel today at Modesto High at 1:15 p.m.

"This is an opportunity for students at both schools to meet and share stories about Larry," said MHS principal Jason Mannning. "And it's also a chance for the staff members at Modesto High to pay tribute to Larry's wife (Becci) and let her know what an impact Larry had on our lives."
