Don’t let us become next Oakland

October 8, 2013

I loved your informative column “Campaign supporting Measure X faces a rough road” (Sept. 29). There could be truth in that, but the citizens of Modesto need to realize that they live in a beautiful city and if they don’t pass Measure X to save a penny, they’ll pay a hefty price when criminals take over.

The murder of 18-year-old Tylor Crippen actually made hope for an opportunity such as Measure X because it became obvious that Modesto might be on the way to becoming another Stockton and maybe even another Oakland. I was born in Oakland in 1955. By 1974, it became obvious that decent people weren’t any longer welcomed there and my family had to leave. Today if you dare drive through east Oakland you stand a real chance of being shot and the shooter never caught. I therefore urge all citizens of Modesto not to lose their beautiful city to thugs.
