SONORA — Two people died in a three-car crash Sunday morning near Sonora.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Highway 120 at Keystone Ranch just before 7 a.m.
Scott Hamilton, 34, of Manteca was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup east at 55 mph. At the same time, a 34-year-old man from Tuolumne City was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier west at an unknown speed.
For undetermined reasons, Hamilton allowed his truck to veer to the left and into the westbound lane of the highway, into the path of the Cavalier. The left front of the truck hit the left front of the car, sending the truck spinning south and the car spinning north.
Kelly Rodman, 29, of Sonora was driving a Ford Explorer west on Highway 120. She saw the crash and tried to avoid it, swerving to the right. But the left front of the Explorer hit the right side of the Cavalier, sending it spinning farther along the roadway before it came to rest on the right shoulder.
The driver of the Cavalier and his passenger, a 29-year-old woman from Tuolumne City, were declared dead at the scene. The CHP withheld their names pending notification of their families. Hamilton and Rodman suffered moderate injuries and were taken to area hospitals.
The crash remains under investigation, the CHP said.
