— It hasn’t officially opened yet, but the giant Amazon distribution center already has put dozens of people to work and is generating excitement throughout the area.

The Internet giant’s fulfillment center is scheduled to open this fall. An Amazon representative has not responded to requests for specifics, but the million-square-foot center looks finished, down to the growing number of cars lining its massive parking lot (which includes several prime spots for electric vehicles).

Sue Caldera-Troncoso said in a post on The Bee’s Facebook page that her husband landed a job with the distribution center after two years of looking for stable work.

“It was a very long wait since he applied in May,” she wrote. “Yet he is finally working and is very happy. I am so happy for him and thankful to Amazon for hiring him and many of these people that really needed jobs.”

Mayor Luis Molina said he has heard from local businesses that they already are benefiting from the Amazon employees. Amazon hasn’t specified how many people will work at the center once it’s fully functioning, other than to put the number at “hundreds.”

“It’s exciting, but we will know better when they are up and running,” Molina said.

North of Patterson, an Amazon distribution center also is set to open in Tracy. That facility will handle smaller items, while Patterson will process larger products such as barbecues and appliances.

All those employees soon will have a new place to eat, and to buy video games. Panda Express and GameStop are under construction in the Sperry Road center that houses a Walmart that opened earlier this year.

Amazon continues to hire for the Patterson center; a check on Friday showed a variety of jobs available, ranging from operations manager to robotics maintenance technician.
