Merced’s American Legion plans event to support injured veterans

Sun-Star staff reportsOctober 1, 2013

Local veterans plan a shooting competition to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project next month.

The Safety First Shooting Association, American Legion Post 83 and other local veterans organizations have scheduled the Valley Veterans Three-Gun Match at 9 a.m. Nov. 2 at the River Oaks Range, at 11584 N. Shaffer Road.

All firearms and ammunition will be provided, according to a press release.

“The event is open to shooters of all abilities, but we especially would like to invite our veterans and disabled veterans to compete,” event chairman Dave Givens said in the release.

Givens said that accommodations will be made for disabled veterans. All proceeds will go to Wounded Warriors Project, a veterans service organization that offers programs, services and events for wounded veterans of military actions since Sept. 11, 2001.

Admission to the range is $10 per person, which includes lunch. Match entry fees are $10 each for the pistol, rifle and shotgun shoot. Raffles and a silent auction are planned.

Several veterans organizations will also be present, the release stated.
