The Central California Art Association at the Mistlin Gallery will host an Art in the Garden fundraising tour on Saturday that includes six private gardens near downtown Modesto.
The self-guided tour features 35 artists showing photography, ceramics, jewelry and face painting in an outdoor setting. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided at various locations. Tour maps can be obtained in Modesto at the Mistlin Gallery, Tresetti’s World Caffe, Queen Bean and the Morris and Westurf nurseries and in Turlock at the Carnegie Art Center.
The tour will benefit the CCAA, a nonprofit organization which provides exhibits, art education and cultural opportunities in the community.

Mural In A Day in Tuolumne County
More than 50 artists will gather in Sonora this weekend for Mural In A Day, an outdoor public art display that actually will take place over two days. It will honor a longtime vendor at the regional farmers market who was killed in a car accident last year.
Known by locals as Ed the Flower Guy, Eleazar Rodriguez will be depicted on a portion of the 12-by-24-foot mural on the south wall of a building at 105 Stewart St., Sonora. The mural, designed by artist Judy Grossman, shows a typical Saturday morning at the farmers market with Rodriguez and his flower stand included.
Several artists will gather and work to paint the mural on Saturday and Sunday; spectators are invited to take their chairs and sit to watch the art piece take shape. The weekend event will include live music, food, art activities for children and a street dance. On Saturday, the weekly farmers market also will be held. Events begin at 7:30 a.m. both days and end at 6 p.m.
Oktoberfest benefit for Pediatric center
Forty craft breweries will be represented throughout an Oktoberfest Ally during the Maya Rose Children’s Fund Oktoberfest set for Saturday at Roseburg Square in Modesto.
The event is a benefit to build a Pediatric Community House in the Central Valley, according to a press release from Tom and Dorene Arnold of Appetez Pub & BBQ, also located in Roseburg Square. The Arnolds’ daughter, Maya Rose, was born with complex disabilities and needed care that could not be found in the Central Valley.
“With that experience in mind, we are reaching out to individuals, businesses and the community at large to help us create and support a special Pediatric Community House in our own Central Valley,” the Arnolds wrote in the release. “This Center will offer respite care, hydrotherapy and aquatic palliative therapy, pediatric end-of-life resources and bereavement services for both the children, families and loved ones, right here in Stanislaus County.”
VIP entrance – $60 – is from noon to 1 p.m. with public entry –$40 – 1 to 5 p.m. A 209 Beer Society Fest featuring home brewers and dinner is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and costs $20.

Vocalist at Sunday Afternoons at CBS
Soprano Shawnette Sulker will kick off the Sunday Afternoons at CBS concert this weekend in Modesto.
Sulker has performed in operatic and concert venues around the Bay Area and internationally. She has performed with Modesto’s Townsend Opera Players in “Porgy and Bess” and “The Magic Flute,” “Qateeni” at the Gallo Center for the Arts, numerous roles with the San Francisco Opera, as well as in Naples, Amsterdam, Leipzig, Estonia, Hawaii, Osaka and at the Museum of the African Diaspora. She is a resident artist for the Natchez Music Festival, Banff Center for the Arts and Stanford University.

Yellowjackets at the Gallo Center
Jazz ensemble the Yellowjackets will play a show next month at the Gallo Center for the Arts in downtown Modesto.
Among the most honored jazz ensembles of the past 30 years, the Yellowjackets released its self-titled debut album in 1981. The group’s latest release is this year’s “A Rise in the Road,” which debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes jazz chart.
Today’s incarnation of the Yellowjackets includes Russell Ferrante on keyboards, Bob Mintzer on sax, Felix Pastorius on bass and William Kennedy on drums.

Comedy show benefit for ailing child
Comedian Dillon Garcia will headline a benefit show on Saturday for the family of Joey Rocha, a 1-year-old Modesto boy suffering from leukemia.
Garcia has appeared on Comedy Central. Also performing will be comedian Jesus Sepulveda, and the evening will be hosted by Dane Madden. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Club Max inside the DoubleTree Hotel. Tickets are $15.
