An 18-year-old Merced County man was shot in the leg Tuesday evening in Winton, the Merced County Sheriffs Department said.
The victim, whose name was not released, suffered a single gunshot wound to his shin and was taken to an area hospital for treatment, Deputy Delray Shelton said. He described the injury as superficial.
No suspect descriptions were available Wednesday.
Deputies responded at 5:05 p.m. to the area of Cypress and Fairlane avenues after receiving multiple emergency reports of gunshots fired.
Shelton said the shooting may have been connected to an argument that happened at least 45 minutes earlier at Winton Groceries in the 6800 block of Santa Fe Drive.
We believe it all stemmed from that incident at the store, Shelton said.
However, whether the same people were involved in both incidents was still under investigation Wednesday afternoon, Shelton said.
During the confrontation outside the store, three people got into a dispute with another man. The parties left the area and, about 45 minutes later, the shots were fired at the intersection of Cypress Avenue and Fairlane Avenue, about half a mile away, Shelton said.
It wasnt clear what led to the argument and subsequent shooting.
We believe there is a connection, but the motive is completely unknown at this point, Shelton said.
He said a gang connection in the case has not been ruled out.
