Modesto Junior College men's water polo team rallies, but comes up short against American River

The Modesto Junior College men's water polo team rallied from behind but could not complete the comeback in a 10-9 Big 8 Conference loss to American River on Wednesday at the Dave Ashleigh Aquatics Center.

Modesto (7-3, 1-1) pulled to within 10-9 on a goal by Tyler Jamieson with 1:06 left. The Pirates gained possession with 13 seconds to go but could not get off a shot.

Tyler Bolton paced the Pirates with five goals, followed by Matt Watling, Kody Kamstra, Zach Hamman and Jamieson with one apiece. Jeremy Day had seven saves in the cage.

Women's Water Polo

• PIRATES BEATEN —American River overwhelmed the Pirates 18-5 despite three goals by Kristine Groteguth. MJC (4-6, 0-2) also featured Kamarin Waite and Bianca Zeiger with a goal apiece and goalkeeper Ellisa Williams with 10 saves.


• EASY WIN —The Pirates rode pins by Yssac Tubera (141), Carson Homuth (149), Ryan Mackey (197) and Travis Smith (heavyweight) to a 45-4 victory over San Joaquin Delta at MJC Gym. Latrell Benjamin (165) won by technical fall, and Luis Quintero (157) and Alex Grijalba (174) scored major decisions. The Pirates also claimed four of six wins over Sacramento State's club team.
