Pirates score late to remain perfect

September 24, 2013

— Modesto Junior College's Big-8 Conference-opening soccer match against San Joaquin Delta was scoreless until the 78th minute, when the Pirates took charge.

Francisco "Cha Cha" Chavez dispossessed his opponent and fired a shot off the crossbar, but Adrian Partida cleaned up the rebound for the shutout-breaking goal. The Pirates (7-0), ranked No. 1 in Northern California, added goals by Partida and Alex Bettencourt for a 3-1 win Tuesday at MJC West.

Goalie Edgar Martinez had eight saves, two during Delta first-half breakaway opportunities.

"Those saves were the difference for us," coach Steve Aristotelous said.
