Merced candidate forum planned next week

Sun-Star staff reportsSeptember 24, 2013

The Merced County chapter of the League of Women Voters plans a candidate forum next week, according to a press release.

The Merced City Council and mayoral hopefuls have been invited to take part in the event from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Merced Civic Center, 678 W. 18th Street.

The league is taking questions from the public at facebook.com/lwvmercedco or by email at lwvmercedco@gmail.com. Questions will also be taken at the forum, according to the release.

The forum will be simultaneously translated in Spanish and Hmong, the release stated.

Vying for the mayoral seat and three open council seats are 10 candidates.

Incumbent Mayor Stan Thurston will face Councilman Noah Lor in the mayor’s race.

At least two new faces will join the council this year because two sitting members of council, Bill Blake and Mary-Michal Rawling, will not run for re-election.

Incumbent Josh Pedrozo will face Michael Belluomini, Kevin Blake, Alex Gallardo Jr., Jana Mowrer, Peter Padilla, Chris Ramirez and Monica Kay Villa.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed participation of citizens in government. The group is a grass-roots organization, working at the national, state and local levels.
