An elderly man from Hercules died early Monday after the car he was riding in hit a big rig on Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident, reported at 3:05 a.m., occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Highway 165 in the Los Banos area. According to the CHP, the man, whose name and age were not released, was riding in a 1998 Infiniti driven by Alexander Filichev, 22, of Hercules.
Filichev was driving 70 mph in the fast lane when he came upon a big rig going slower. Filichev moved from the fast lane to the slow lane to pass the big rig and came upon a slower-moving 1994 Freightliner driven by Mario Harrera, 48, of Hanford.
The Infiniti hit the back of the Freightliner. The man killed was riding in the back of the car and was not wearing a seat belt. He was declared dead at the scene. Filichev, who also was unrestrained, suffered major injuries and was taken to Los Banos Memorial Hospital. Another passenger, Serguy Filichev, 50, was riding in the front passenger’s seat. He was wearing a seat belt. He suffered major injuries and was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
The accident remained under investigation Monday afternoon; the CHP said investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor.
