Roundup: MC rolls; Gustine takes 'The Chief'

• MODESTO CHRISTIAN 45, EAST UNION 0, at Salida — Andre Edwards and Anthony Brooks combined for 276 yards rushing and six touchdows as the Crusaders (3-1) routed the Lancers. Brooks (10 carries, 140 yards) scored on runs of 46, 34 and 10 yards. Edwards (139 yards, 11 carries) had scoring runs of 14, 26 and 66 yards. Brooks also connected with Zach Scott on a 67-yard pass play. MC finished withi 381 yards on the ground. East Union (1-3) plays host to Oakdale next Friday.

• GUSTINE 17, ORESTIMBA 14, at Gustine — Deric Cunha's 35-yard field goal with 10 seconds left lifted the Redskins to their first win over the Warriors (0-4) in nine years. Gustine (1-2) regained "The Chief," the emblem of the long Highway 33 series. "It's really hard to put into words. It affects the whole town," Gustine coach Russell McWilliams said. Orestimba running back Steven Machado, coming back from a hamstring injury, played sparingly but scored during the first half. The Warriors led 14-7 at halftime before Gustine rallied. The Redskins' Isaiah Figueroa rallied his team by rushing for 123 yards on 26 carries.

• CALAVERAS 13, SONORA 7, at San Andreas — The Redskins improved to 2-1 behind a stout defense that shut down the Wildcats. Mikey Seawell had a 4-yard TD run and Justyn Thornburg scored from a yard out to give Calaveras a 13-0 lead. Sonora's Andrew Nessie scored on a 1-yarder, but it wasn't enough for Sonora.

• RIPON CHRISTIAN 47, BIG VALLEY CHRISTIAN 0, at Ripon — Andrew Brown rushed for 128 yards and scored all three of his touchowns in a 41-point first-half blitz to lead the Knights over Big Valley. Brown scored on runs of 1, 24 and 4 yards as RC improved to 2-1 ahead of its Southern League opener at Mariposa next Friday. Quarterback Billy Marr completed 9 of 17 passes, including a 5-yard TD pass to Jared Stuit. RC's Will Kamps had nine tackles, two sacks and returned a block punt 15 yards for a touchdown.

• HILMAR 47, FRESNO 18, at Hilmar — Johnathan O'Brien completeed 8 of 11 passes for 76 yards and rushed for two touchdowns and Bailey Gomes rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown as the Yellowjackets improved to 4-0 with a rout of Fresno. The game was never in doubt as Hilmar raced out to a 33-0 lead. The Yellowjackets face a big Trans-Valley League opener next week against 3-1 Modesto Christian. Joseph Bello scored on a 1-yard TD run and also had an interception and fumble recovery.

• SUMMERVILLE 40, DENAIR 12, at Tuolumne City — Brendan Brick rushed for two touchdowns and Brice Farrell rushed for one and threw for another as the Bears handled the Coyotes. Summerville won its first game of the season thanks, in part, to a 27-point second quarter that gave the Bears a 33-12 halftime lead. Denair's Trey Howze had scoring runs of 45 and 74 yards.
