Flames, above, leap from a 20-acre tract of riverside property north of Oakdale on Friday afternoon while firefighters work to quell the conflagration. At one point, the fire threatened 10 nearby structures before crews from eight area agencies got it under control. The fire, which was reported at 3:20 p.m., sent plumes of black smoke into the air and shrouded the city of Oakdale in smoke until it was under control after about 5:30 p.m., according to Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Capt. Matthew Condit. Oakdale resident Martie Campbell, left, uses a mask to help breathe through the smoke from the fire while talking to area residents whose homes were threatened.
