Regarding Valley seeks federal dollars (Sept. 12, Page A-1): Waterford Mayor Charlie Goeken is right we are all going to have to work together to revive our struggling economy and make sure that local roads and bridge projects get the funding they need.
The good news is, fixing our economy and creating jobs through investment in roads, bridges and other similar projects such as railways are very much related. Were living through an economy right now where tens of millions of Americans are unemployed or under-employed meaning theyd work more if they could only find work. At the same time, our smartest civil engineers tell us that one out of every nine highway bridges in the U.S. is structurally deficient. Witness the collapsed bridges we hear about year after year.
Congress should follow the lead of Goeken and other local officials and work together regardless of political label to pass a budget that supports working families, provides jobs and stops the cuts that have so hurt our communities. Its time for Congress to end the bickering and work together to make our country and our economy stronger.
