Yong Zhao, an expert in globalization and technology in education with the University of Oregon, will speak at a regional education summit at Modesto Junior College on Oct. 5.
Innovate Education 2013, geared to teachers, administrators and parents, will be a day of learning sessions hosted by Brandman University. Workshops will include Common Core practices, enhancing creativity, meeting educational goals and the movement-learning connection.
Zhao has designed schools promoting global competence, developed computer games for language learning and founded institutions to research innovations in educational models.
Also presenting is Donna Porter, recognized as one of the “Ten Most Inspirational” teachers in the country at the Kennedy Center in 2012. Her work has included the application of innovative techniques to create effective learning environments for students from diverse and challenging backgrounds. Her workshop will be “From Punishment to Empowerment: Conscious Discipline.”
“This is a very exciting and unique opportunity to discuss and exchange the ideas that we can implement today that will help us build 21st century learners,” said Niki Santo, director of the Brandman Modesto Campus. “This conference is about success and how to succeed, and tools that educators can take and use to enhance their classrooms and schools the following Monday.”
