A Modesto man was killed and his wife suffered major injuries early Friday morning when their car was hit by a big rig on country roads east of the town of Lockeford.
Linda Carter, 63, and Donald Carter, 64, were traveling south on Clements Road in a 1996 Ford around 7 a.m. when the driver of an eastbound big rig on Brandt Road ran a stop sign at the intersection, California Highway Patrol Officer James Smith said.
The big rig, driven by 66-year-old James White, was traveling about 45 mph when it hit the right side of the Ford, pushing the car down an embankment on the southeast shoulder of the intersection, Smith said.
Donald Carter died at the scene. Linda Carter, who was driving, was taken to San Joaquin County General Hospital with major but non-life-threatening injuries.
White was taken to Lodi Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The accident remains under investigation. Smith said it does not appear alcohol or drugs were involved.
