San Andreas — A San Jacinto woman suffered major injuries after the big rig she was riding in rolled over near San Andreas, ejecting her, authorities said. The accident led to an extended closure of a stretch of Highway 49 in Calaveras County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 49 south of the Amador County line.
Michael Kidd Sr., 57, of San Jacinto was driving a 2007 Freightliner loaded with slurry used in concrete when, he told the CHP, the brakes failed and he lost control of the big rig.
The tractor trailer flipped onto the passenger side and hit the guardrail, then went down the side of an embankment, rolling over before coming to rest on the drivers side.
Tonia Kidd, 58, who had been riding in the sleeper cab, was ejected. Emergency responders found her about 50 feet from the vehicle.
Tonia Kidd was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries. Michael Kidd suffered minor injuries and was taken to Sutter Amador hosptial.
The road was closed for several hours to remove the slurry and recover the big rig.
