MODESTO — A bicyclist riding on the Virginia Corridor bridge discovered a body floating in the irrigation canal below Wednesday morning.
Authorities determined that the man, Marvin Rogers, 64, of Modesto, drowned, according to Modesto Police spokesperson Heather Graves. The drowning appears to have been accidental but police are continuing to investigate.
Rogers had been in the water for several hours when the the bicyclist discovered his body about 6:43 a.m.
He was floating in about two feet of water in the irrigation canal along Briggsmore Avenue west of McHenry Avenue. Police remained at the scene for several hours while they investigated.
Graves said authorities are trying to determine what the man was doing near the canal. They dont know where exactly he went in but believe it was close to the location at which he was found, she said.
