End of Western civilization?

September 9, 2013

Have you ever noticed how much people – especially conservatives – talk about the end of Western civilization as we know it?

Well, I have my own little insight into when the end of Western civilization was completed. It happened not long ago in a history class I took at Modesto Junior College. I was told by my instructor that it is no longer permissible to use the designations B.C. (Before Christ) and A.D. (“Anno Domini”, or “in the year of our Lord”) next to a date in history. This is because those designations are no longer inclusive enough for our increasingly pluralistic society. Henceforth, we shall use the designations B.C.E. (Before Common Era) and C.E. (Common Era).

See, it’s the end of Western civilization as we know it.

All kidding aside, it is time that we, as Christ-followers in America, face the fact that we are now more like missionaries in a foreign land than we have ever been. We can either complain about it, or pray and embrace our roles as pilgrims and exiles who are called to be salt and light to the decay and darkness that is all around us.
