Modesto mural an ode to Royal Robbins

— Modesto's first community mural received some finishing touches Thursday.

It's graffiti artist Aaron Vickery's ode to Royal Robbins, a local hiking celebrity, and to Yosemite National Park.

The piece is on the Needham Street side of the Camp 4 building at 1508 10th St. It's fitting for the building, which housed the Royal Robbins clothing store for years. Camp 4 is run by Robbins' son, Damon, and named for the famed climber's camp at Yosemite.

Vickery also has done the murals "Chevy Bel Air" on the Modesto Chamber of Commerce building on J Street and "Modesto Graffiti" at 13th and J streets.

Murals in Motown, the volunteer group behind the effort, is seeking more businesses interested in highlighting other Modesto heroes and success stories.
