A carpet of canned food is being laid in Father O'Hare Hall at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Oakdale Road in Modesto. The food is being collected in an effort to set a Guinness world record and to benefit St. Joseph's St. Vincent de Paul, Inter-Faith Ministries of Greater Modesto and United Samaritans Foundation. An update from St. Joseph's on Thursday said about 25,000 cans have been donated or pledged; 30,001 are needed to set the record.

Before Sunday, food donations can be dropped off at five Modesto locations: St. Joseph's Church office, 1813 Oakdale Road, (209) 551-4973; Jaunt Outdoor Adventures Gear, 1508 10th St., (209) 622-0261; Castle Real Estate, 1418 J St., (209) 526-1010; Sportsmen of Stanislaus Club, 819 Sunset Ave., (209) 578-5801; and Berg Injury Lawyers, 1317 Oakdale Road, Suite 500.

On Sunday, donations still will be taken at St. Joseph's. The final count will be at 8 p.m., with Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh serving as the record verifier.
