Community rescues MJC horse program

September 4, 2013

A very heartfelt thank you goes out to our wonderful community for caring so much about local higher education and specifically their local community college – MJC.

Recently you may have read about a story in The Bee or seen it on the local television news about a theft at Modesto Junior College coming within weeks before the start of the fall semester and threatening the popular MJC equine program. I am happy to report that the program is in better condition than before the theft because of the generous support offered by our surrounding community. According to our MJC professor Julie Haynes, MJC has received more than twice that which was stolen.

Over 50 individuals and businesses (and still counting) have responded to the MJC equine program’s need. Donations have been received in the form of cash, equipment and supplies such as saddles, bridles, even horses and more totaling over $25,000 in value. The contributors have come not only from the immediate Modesto area, but also from Denair, Oakdale, Ripon, Escalon, Sonora, Salida, Livingston, Hilmar, Turlock, Patterson, LaGrange, Waterford, Lodi, Tracy, Discovery Bay, Clements, Burson, Livermore, and as far away as Fallbrook (San Diego County) and Reno. The outpouring of support is a testament to the quality of the MJC agriculture program, the college itself and the community that we serve. The enthusiasm goes well beyond the necessary supplies for the class. According to professor Haynes, over 15 students were on the wait list for the class on the first day of instruction.

On behalf of MJC and the equine program, thank you again for your generosity.
