HUGHSON — A man died Tuesday afternoon when his Jeep hit the car in front of him, sending the Jeep rolling onto a canal bank just outside Hughson.
The man was traveling east on Hatch Road west of Santa Fe Avenue when he hit the rear right side of a silver Honda about 4:20 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol officer Eric Parsons. The driver of the Honda, 36-year-old Michael Argento of Oakdale, told police he was driving about 40 mph when he saw the Jeep in his rearview mirror coming up behind him at a high rate of speed.
The driver of the Jeep, whose name police did not release, took what appeared to be evasive action to avoid hitting the Honda, swerving to the right onto the dirt shoulder but clipping the back of the Honda, Parsons said.
The Jeep rolled onto the embankment and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. He died at the scene.
Argento suffered minor injuries.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the accident, Parsons said.
