Firefighters on Sunday extinguished a fire that burned about eight acres straddling the Tuolumne River near John Thurman Field, the Modesto Regional Fire Authority reported.

The cause is not known. The fire was reported at 2:06 p.m. near Neece Drive, Battalion Chief Cecil Ridge said.

It damaged an outbuilding and burned grass, brush and trees, he said. Part of the area has been cordoned off until trees in danger of falling can be examined, he said.

Crews from the Ceres and Burbank-Paradise fire departments helped get the fire out by about 8:30 p.m.
