— Board of Education members learned Tuesday night about this summer's renovation projects at Merced City School District campuses and signed off on major renovations just completed at Alicia Reyes Elementary School.

While children were home on vacation, district maintenance staff members were busy. They put in wrought iron fencing behind Ada Givens Elementary School, resurfaced some middle school gymnasium floors, replaced carpeting at several schools, upgraded heating-cooling units and changed out some windows.

Maintenance supervisor Bill Rains and operations supervisor Juan Mendoza updated board members on the summer projects, which also included adding cushioning material at some elementary school playgrounds.

"There was quite a bit of work done," said Greg Spicer, the district's associate superintendent for administrative services.

A $172,000 upgrading of Reyes School classrooms by Iomlan Construction Inc. of Turlock was accepted as complete, along with a $197,000 project to replace the roof at the South N Street school, Spicer said.

The district bought $100,000 in roofing materials that were installed by workmen from Legacy Roofing in San Jose. The exterior of Rivera Middle School also was repainted over the summer.

Money for the Reyes remodeling, which included new cabinetry and cabling for electrical and computer uses, came from Measure S bond funds. Reyes School opened in the 1989-90 school year.
