High school football season kicks off Friday

jcortez@modbee.comAugust 30, 2013

Depending on what time of the day you're reading this story, the 2013 high school football season is either hours or mere minutes from kicking off.

Either way, that great phenomenon known as High School Football Season is once again upon us.

So, no matter where you live or which school colors you fly, it's time to pick a game and get yourself out to a local stadium. Here are a few of the games that you should put at the top of your list if you're trying to figure out where to go tonight.

Los Banos at Escalon — Los Banos won 34-32 in the teams' first matchup last season, giving rookie Dustin Caropreso his first career coaching victory. The rematch came three months later in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 semifinals, and Escalon won 42-35 in quadruple overtime.

Le Grand at Orestimba — Take a trip to out-of-the-way Newman to watch running back Steven Machado, who has a shot at the Stanislaus District's career rushing record (5,140), held by Louis Bland of Central Catholic. Machado needs 1,921 yards to break the mark. If that seems like a lot, just remember he rushed for 1,927 last year. And don't forget, Le Grand is the three-time defending Division 5 champion.

Manteca at Central Valley — If you just can't convince yourself to drive out to Newman, think about a shorter trip to Ceres to watch CV's Ja'Quan Gardner, who also has a shot at Bland's record. Gardner needs 1,594 yards to surpass the mark.

Oakdale at Turlock — This is one of the fiercest rivalries in the region. Two schools with winning traditions separated by 20 miles. Almost always played during the opening week, it's always a wonderful way to kick off the season.• TodayAtwater at Franklin-Elk Grove
