Arson fire quickly put out at Ceres school

— A fire at Carroll Fowler Elementary School in Ceres on Sunday evening caused little damage because of quick action by neighbors and the Ceres Fire Department.

The fire damaged the siding of an older portable classroom used as a music room, but should be repaired before classes need the room, said Jay Simmonds, assistant superintendent for Ceres Unified School District.

"Some kids pushed a trash can up against a portable and set it on fire," Simmonds said, crediting fast calls from school neighbors and quick action by firefighters with limiting damage to less than $1,000. "It could have been a lot worse than it was," he said.
