Art Hop fund-raiser brings in nearly $2,000

— The second annual Merced Art Hop fund-raiser brought about 80 revelers Thursday evening to the Merced Civic Center, where some drank wine and ate hors d'oeuvres, while others perused the work of local artists.

Organizer Kevin Hammon said raffles, tickets sales, a silent auction and other fund-raisers brought in about $2,000, which goes toward the quarterly downtown Merced Art Hop.

The success of the fund-raiser is judged on more than just the dollars raised.

"Of course, we're trying to generate funds to keep it going, but at the same time there's connections being made," Hammon said, adding artists get to rub elbows with city officials.

Along with the money made, Hammon said, artists were given a chance to show off their art. He hopes city officials see the people and art at the event, and realize the importance of art.

"I think it kind of tells a story about the community," Hammon said. "You kind of take a look at the art and what it is, and who's here."

The goals of the quarterly Merced Art Hop are twofold, Hammon said, because the event gives artists a venue and draws foot traffic to Main Street.

The Art Hop is funded through the fund-raiser, advertising, donations and a contribution from the city.

Hammon said Merced Art Hop is a nonprofit organization, and takes donations through the United Way, at 658 W. Main St. in downtown Merced.

The next Merced Art Hop is 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 19 along Main Street.
