August 23, 2013

— Police Explorers from several different Merced County law enforcement agencies gathered Aug. 10 at the Delhi Educational Park for the Explorer and Cadets Competition Training Day.

Teams of Explorers competed in a variety of events and training exercises, including vehicle and building searches, felony stops, responding to domestic violence calls, active shooter, traffic accident investigation, and crime scene investigation, according to organizers.

Participating agencies included the Merced County Sheriff's Department, the Merced Police Department, the Livingston Police Department and the Atwater Police Department.

The objectives of the competition were to provide challenging scenarios for Explorers and cadets in a variety of law enforcement situations, in addition to providing opportunities for the exchange of information and networking opportunities.

The event included SWAT Team, Search and Rescue, K9 and Bomb Squad demonstrations.

The Explorers were organized into eight teams, and trophies were awarded for first through third place in each event.

The event included competition for individuals.

Teams were scored on approaches to each scenario, officer safety, communicating with other team members, verbal communication with suspects, apprehension of suspect and concluding each scenario within the time limit, according to organizers.
