Farm Beat: Fall fine time to support ag organizations

jholland@modbee.comAugust 23, 2013

— Autumn approaches, a time not just for harvesting, but for tending to the next generation of farmers.

Several events in the Modesto area will celebrate the 2013 bounty while raising money for scholarships and other ag education causes.

The schedule:

• Harvest Luncheon: The 52nd annual event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13 in Graceada Park, at Needham Street and Sycamore Avenue. It is presented by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. As usual, the luncheon will feature Mape's Ranch tri-tip and other locally grown food. The guest speaker is Wayne Zipser, executive manager of the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau.

Proceeds will go to scholarships for agriculture students at Modesto Junior College, in a fund named for former state ag secretaries Henry Voss and Clare Berryhill. Tickets are $25 general admission, $10 for seniors and children under 12. A $350 sponsorship includes eight tickets. To reserve a seat, visit www.modchamber.org or call (209) 577-5757.

• Tastes of the Valley: The Oct. 3 event will benefit the agricultural studies department at California State University, Stanislaus, and the Friends of the Fair Foundation. It will feature wine, cheese, hors d'oeuvres and silent and live auctions from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Stanislaus County Fairground, 900 N. Broadway, Turlock. The $35 tickets can be reserved at (209) 664-6648 or (209) 668-1333.

• MJC Agriculture Department open house: The 61st annual event will be the evening of Oct. 10, featuring student displays, a dinner and more. Details were not available.

• Good Egg Breakfast: The 51st annual event will be at 7 a.m. Oct. 24 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 1150 Ninth St., Modesto. It will feature made-to-order omelets and presentation of the 2013 Good Egg Award to an egg industry supporter. An executive from Elanco, a global provider of animal health products and services, will speak. Proceeds will go to scholarships for MJC ag students. The $22 tickets can be reserved by calling one of the sponsors: California Poultry Federation, (209) 576-6355; Modesto Chamber of Commerce, (209) 577-5757; Pacific Egg and Poultry Association, (916) 441-0801; or Stanislaus County Farm Bureau, (209) 522-7278.

• Ag Hall of Fame: The 16th annual Stanislaus Agricultural Hall of Fame Dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Assyrian-American Civic Club, 2618 N. Golden State Blvd., Turlock. This year's inductee is Ed Rocha and his agricultural trucking company, Rocha's Valley Enterprises, which dates to 1924. The event raises money for the National Ag Science Center, which runs the Ag in Motion mobile classroom for junior high school students and other programs. The $125 tickets can be ordered at www.agsciencecenter.org or (209) 521-2902.
