Free admittance comes with an obstacle

August 21, 2013

Yosemite National Park is offering free admission Sunday, in observation of the anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service.

However, the park may not be easily inaccessible for Modesto area residents unless the large and growing Rim Fire on the north side of the park is brought under control by then.

Highway 120 is closed in both directions at this time. We urge potential visitors to check the fire status before heading toward the park.

We have regular updates on modbee.com, and the Stanislaus National Forest provides details on its fire incident website at http://inciweb.org/incident/3660.

This may be one of those situations where a free opportunity is not a good deal.

Modesto Bee is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
