TURLOCK — A Turlock man was arrested on suspicion of drug charges Wednesday after a fire broke out in his kitchen.
The Turlock Fire Department was dispatched to a home at 107 Hedstrom Road when a neighbor called 911 after seeing the resident run from his house screaming that his kitchen was on fire.
The man, identified as Charles Khio, 29, told firefighters a pan on the stove had ignited a nearby kitchen towel. He said he had tried to smother the flames with a blanket and pillow.
Firefighters extinguished the flames within 10 minutes of arriving. During an investigation into the cause of the fire, evidence of a hashish oil extraction lab was located and police were called, officer Mayra Lewis said in a news release.
Lewis did not return calls Thursday inquiring about what evidence was found and whether the cause of the fire could be related to manufacturing hash oil. The process often requires butane.
Khio was arrested on suspicion of manufacturing hash oil, possession of marijuana and violation of probation. The fire caused an estimated $6,000 in damage to the kitchen of the rented home.
