Straight No Chaser
All-male a cappella group Straight No Chaser returns to the Gallo Center for the Arts for an encore performance. The group’s December holiday performance was popular, leading to several requests from patrons to bring the singers back again. Formed in 1996 at Indiana University, the group turned into a nationwide sensation when a YouTube video of its distinctive rendition of “The 12 Days of Christmas” went viral in 2006. The group’s latest CD, “Under the Influence,” includes guest performances from Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Elton John and other stars.

Bruce Springsteen tribute band The Rising is performing the Boss’ biggest hits this weekend at the West Side Theatre in Newman. The eight-piece band from Los Angeles performs everything from Springsteen’s 1973 album, “Greetings from Asbury Park,” to 2012’s “Wrecking Ball.”

Alternative country and folk rock singer Brandi Carlile is known for her powerhouse vocals and has released five studio albums, including “Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony” and, most recently, “Bear Creek.” The 32-year-old Washington native won Seattle’s City of Music Breakthrough Award for 2010. She plays tonight at the Turlock Community Theatre.

Columbia State Historic Park’s “History’s Mysteries” program invites families to help solve a crime that actually occurred in the 1800s in Columbia. Families will witness the event, interview key members to the crime and get a chance to subpoena them in court. At the end, the families determine the outcome of the case.

The State Theatre will put the final film in the “Star Wars” saga, “Return of the Jedi,” on its big screen this weekend. The film, from Modesto native George Lucas, finds Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) taking his last step to becoming a Jedi knight, while Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) also fight the good fight against the Empire.
