Man struck by train in downtown Modesto dies

Union Pacific Railroad officials are on scene on Wednesday morning on I street between 8th and 9th in downtown Modesto, Ca. (08-14-13) where reports were that a man was hit by a train. Early reports are that the man survived and was transported to an area hospital.

— The man who was struck by a train on Wednesday morning in downtown Modesto has died.

At 7:45 a.m., officers with the Modesto Police Department were called to the train tracks on I Street between 8th and 9th streets on a report of a man who had been hit by a train.

Emergency crews arrived and took the 25-year-old man to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Witnesses report seeing the man, who was carrying a bag of alumninum cans, walking past the railroad crossing arm with his head down as the train approached.

The train's horn was blowing, but the train could not be stopped before hitting the man.

It is unknown if this was an accidental death or suicide. The investigation is ongoing.

The incident caused widespread traffic issues in various directions throughout the downtown area. Highway 99 also backed up as several railroad crossings were blocked.
