Info: True Light Community Church will hold a community service event with a clothing giveaway, free haircuts, bags of nonperishable food, free household items and cleaning products and free school supplies for children. COMMUNITY POLICE ACADEMY
When: Wednesdays, Sept. 18 through Nov. 6; application deadline Aug. 30
Where: Modesto Police Department, 600 10th St.
Info: The Modesto Police Department will offer its Community Police Academy, a seven-week-long class, one night a week, for three hours each night. There is no fee to attend. Topics to be covered include: role of American police, laws of arrest, spirit of law/letter of law, gang awareness, drug awareness, rules of evidence, media/information officer, volunteers, traffic enforcement, and search and seizure. Applications will be accepted until class is full, or Aug. 30. Applications can be picked up at the Police Department. Info: The Main Street Chamber, in association with the Riverbank Chamber Of Commerce, will hold a free business expo, open to all businesses and the general public. The event will feature food and beverages, a raffle for a Hawaiian getaway to benefit Riverbank Cares, vendors, chocolate tasting and music. LIBRARY LEGO CLUB
When: Thursday, 3 p.m.
Where: Ceres Public Library, 2250 Magnolia
Info: Children will have the opportunity to make their own creations during LEGO Club at the Ceres Library. Children can use the library's LEGO blocks to create their own designs, which will be displayed in the library. This program is for ages 4 to 12 and provides an excellent opportunity for children to learn how to solve problems and develop fine motor skills. The club will also meet Aug. 22. CARING FOR OAK TREES
When: Thursday, 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: Tuolumne County Ambulance training room, 18440 Striker Court
Info: A free workshop will help landowners care for the oak trees native to the Sierra Nevada foothills. Speakers will cover oak ecology, threats from nonnative landscaping, the trees' benefits to property values and other topics. The event is for people who own large parcels as well as city lots shaded by oaks.
