TURLOCK — The Turlock Gospel Mission is feeling the dog days of August in its pocketbook.
The charity group which helps Turlock’s homeless is facing a $20,000 budget shortfall this month. Executive Director Tim Guerino sent out a brief email to supporters last week looking for public help to offset the group’s “extreme cash flow challenge” which has put it in danger of not paying its bills.
August has historically been a tough fund-raising month for the organization, but this season it’s even worse. The gospel mission relies on donations and contributions for its $400,000 annual budget.
The funds are used primarily to support its three main services:
- Homeless Assistance Ministry — A day center that serves as an alternative to the streets and offers resources and help from case workers. It is open everyday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
-Meal Ministry - A progam that works with 23 different churches throughout the city to help provide hot meals to those in need 365 days a year.
-Winter Relief Ministry - An overnight shelter for women and children that is offered from mid-November to early April each year.
The mission is also in the process of a capital campaign to raise some $1.8 million to renovate a building just south of downtown into a year-round overnight shelter for men, women and children. Guerino recently sent out a newsletter saying the group needed $30,000 to complete building plans. Once the plans are drawn, Guerino said prospective donors will have a better vision of the entire project, which they call the Hope Lives Here Campaign, to help bring in more funds for the large undertaking. He hopes to have the project done in eight months.
