Stanislaus County races taking shape

— Contested races are starting to shape up for the local board and council positions to be filled in the Nov. 5 election.

Friday is the deadline for filing, except in cases when the incumbent is not running. In those races, the filing period is Aug. 14.

Here is a recap of the candidates through the third week of the filing period:

• Modesto City Council District 2 — No new candidates; three people have pulled papers: Jon Rodriguez, Tony Madrigal and Juan Telles. Incumbent Dave Geer is not seeking re-election.

• Modesto Council District 4 — Bill Zoslocki has completed the paperwork; Juan Melgoza, Rickey McGill and Ryan Schambers have pulled papers. Incumbent Joe Muratore is not running.

• Modesto Council District 5 — Challenger Jenny Ketchum Kenoyer has completed the paperwork. Councilwoman Stephanie Burnside pulled papers Friday.

• Modesto City Schools board, four-year terms — Incumbent Sue Zwahlen has completed the filing, and her fellow board members Rubén A. Villalobos and Cindy Marks have pulled papers. Two challengers have started the process: Brett McBay and Michael D. Scheid.

• Modesto school board, two-year term — Dean Smeltzer, who initially pulled papers for the four-year term, has switched to this race. Also pulling papers: Charlie Grom and Jordan Dickson. Appointee Stacie Morales announced this week that she will not run for the seat.

• Modesto Irrigation District Division 2 — John Mensinger has declared. Incumbent Glen Wild is not running.

• MID Division 3 — Paul Campbell and Les Johnson have declared. Incumbent Tom Van Groningen is not running.

• MID Division 4 — Jim Mortensen, Jake Wenger and Ted Donham have declared. Incumbent Paul Warda is not running.

• Ceres City Council (two seats) — Councilman Ken Lane has completed the paperwork to run for re-election.

• Stanislaus County Board of Education — Area 1: Incumbent Kim Rose declared; Area 2: no candidate so far; Area 5: Adriana Garcia declared.

• Ceres school board — Incumbents have at least started the paperwork in each of the four areas: Mike Welsh, Area 2; Valli Wigt, Area 3; Lourdes Perez, Area 5; and Betty Sue Davis, Area 6. There still are no challengers.

• Empire school board — Three candidates for three openings: incumbents Patty Shafer and Doug Bentley and former trustee Nick Bavaro.

• Denair school board full term — Three declared candidates for two openings: Sandi Dirkse, Robert Hodges and Travis "T.J." Lake.

• Denair school board short term — One opening; Kathi Dunham-Filson has declared.

• Oakdale school board — Three candidates for three openings in Area 2: incumbents Mike House, Diane Gilbert and Joe Peterson.

• Riverbank school board — Three openings; Patrick Hagan has declared.

• Sylvan school board — The three incumbents have declared: Terriann Zeek, George Rawe and Cyndi Lindsey.

• Turlock Unified school board Area 2 — Incumbent Tami Harrill-Muniz has declared.

• Turlock school board Area 4 — Incumbent Bob Weaver has declared.

• Turlock school board Area 6 — Joe Lewis has declared.

• Turlock Irrigation District Division 2 —

Incumbent Charles Fer-nandes has declared.

• TID Division 3 — Incumbent Joe Alamo has declared.

• TID Division 5 — Incumbent Ron Macedo has declared.
