Dave Koz and Friends are paying tribute to the best horn sections from classic bands like Earth, Wind & Fire; Chicago; Tower of Power; Blood, Sweat & Tears; Sly and the Family Stone and more.

Koz and fellow saxophonists Mindi Abair, Gerald Albright and Richard Elliott play some of those groups' biggest hits on their recent album, "Summer Horns," and will perform them live Aug. 9 at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto.

The songs on their playlist include favorites such as "Got to Get You Into My Life," "Hot Fun in the Summertime," "25 or 6to 4" and "So Very Hard to Go."

"This project was in my musical DNA," Koz said in a video interview posted on YouTube. "I grew up with a penchant for horn bands. The first album I bought was Tower of Power's 'Back to Oakland.' Hearing that album and hearing the power and intensity and funkiness and tightness of the horn section … that was the main impetus for me picking up the saxophone."
