— A charter bus crashed into the cattle trailer of a big rig driven by an Oakdale man on Highway 43, north of Hanford, the California Highway Patrol said. Eleven people were hurt.

The crash happened Thursday afternoon when the big rig's driver slowed for traffic ahead, causing the empty trailer to jackknife into the opposite lanes of traffic at Cairo Avenue near the Kings River, CHP officer Adam Barresi said.

The charter bus, which carried 15 passengers, hit the trailer. The driver of the big rig, David Leroy Hemm, 35, suffered moderate injuries, as did several people on the bus from the Hanford area.

The crash happened about 4:15 p.m. Highway 43 was closed for four hours as emergency crews investigated and cleaned up the wreckage.
