Stanislaus County races taking shape

— After the first week in a four-week filing period for local school board and city council races, there already are some contests shaping up for the Nov. 5 election.

Candidates have until Aug. 9 to file, except in cases where an incumbent is not seeking re-election. In those instances, the filing period is extended through Aug. 14.

Here is a recap of the candidates who have started the paperwork in key races:

• Modesto City Council District 2 — Four people have pulled papers: Jon Rodriguez, Tony Madrigal, Juan Telles and Fabiola Garcia. Incumbent Dave Geer is not seeking re-election.

• Modesto Council District 4 — Three have pulled papers: Bill Zoslocki, Juan Melgoza and Rickey McGill. Incumbent Joe Muratore is not running.

• Modesto Council District 5 — Jenny Ketchum Kenoyer has pulled papers. Incumbent Stephanie Burnside had not pulled papers but is running again.

• Modesto City Schools board, four-year terms — Three incumbents, Sue Zwahlen, Ruben A. Villalobos and Cindy Marks, have pulled papers, as well as two challengers, Brett McBay and Dean Smeltzer.

• Modesto school board, two-year term — No one has pulled papers.

• Modesto Irrigation District Division 2 — John Mensinger has declared. Incumbent Glen Wild is not running.

• MID Division 3 — Paul Campbell has declared. Incumbent Tom Van Groningen is not running.

• MID Division 4 — Jim Mortensen, Jake Wenger and Ted Donham have declared. Incumbent Paul Warda is not running.

• Ceres City Council (two seats) — No one had pulled papers as of Friday afternoon.

• Stanislaus County Board of Education — Areas 1, 2 and 5 are up; no one has pulled papers.

• Ceres school board — Incumbents have declared in each of the four areas: Mike Welsh, Area 2; Valli Wigt, Area 3; Lourdes Perez, Area 5; and Betty Sue Davis, Area 6.

• Denair school board full term — Two openings; Sandi Dirkse has declared.

• Denair school board short term — One opening; Kathi Dunham-Filson has declared.

• Oakdale school board — Three openings in Area 2; no one has declared.

• Riverbank school board — Three openings; no one has declared.

• Turlock Unified school board Area 2 — No one has declared.

• Turlock school board Area 4 — Incumbent Bob Weaver has declared.

• Turlock school board Area 6 — No one has declared.

• Turlock Irrigation District Division 2 — Incumbent Charles Fernandes has declared.

• TID Division 3 — Incumbent Joe Alamo has declared.

• TID Division 5 — Incumbent Ron Macedo has declared.
