SAN JOSE — Niko Gallego went 194 games between home runs. Locked in a scoreless tie with San Jose, and being no-hit Wednesday, it was a fine time for Gallego to strike again.
The Modesto Nuts' third baseman, who had not gone deep since 2010, hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning for the Nuts' first hit of the night and give Modesto a 2-0 victory.
Jared Simon had Modesto's only other hit. Modesto pitchers had previously combined on a ho-hiter against San Jose earlier this season. Giants' prized prospect Kyle Crick pitched five shutout inings, followed by two from Luis Rojas.
Gallego connected on a pitcher from Jose Castilla to give he Nuts the edge.
Modesto relief pitcher Nelson Gonzalez picked up the win after starter Eddie Butler gave up just four hits in five innings, striking out two. The California League series continues tonight in San Jose.
