Turlock's Chiesa, Modesto's Ebster win boys Maroney titles

July 17, 2013

— Turlock High's Teo Chiesa was the only player to shoot par or better for two rounds, and steady golf was enough to claim the overall championship of the George Maroney Junior Golf Tournament, which concluded Wednesday at Dryden Golf Course.

Chiesa, competing in the 16-17 group, followed Tuesday's one-under-par 71 with a final round 72 for a 143 total that gave him a two-stroke victory over Ripon's Nick Sharp. Beyer's Matt Mensinger turned in the round of the day with a 69, moving him into third place with a 148 total.

Modesto's Christopher Ebster claimed the 14-15 flight after carding a 75 for a 147 total.

Andrew Chern's 147 total was good enough to win the 12-13 flight and Tyler Griggs fired an 80 over two nine-hole rounds to win the 10-11 flight.

On the girls' side, Hayden Mammen of Clovis claimed the girls' 16-17 flight with an 80-82—162 total to top the 11 entrants.

Chiesa, who will be a senior at Turlock High, birdied two of the first four holes — the two par-5s on Dryden's front side — to take an ample cushion to the back.

He got to three-under-par for the tournament with a birdie at the short par-4 15th, but made back-to-back bogeys at 16 and 17 to shave the final margin of victory to two strokes.
