We need universal background checks on letter writers, not guns

July 17, 2013

The letter "Listen to us on gun issues"(July 4) was filled with incorrect statements. We are not a democracy. A democracy is, simply put, mob rule. We have what is referred to as a representative republic.

The third sentence, "Gun shows and the Internet currently are not subject to background check regulations" is not true.

While we are all saddened by Sandy Hook and the other mass shootings, I don't feel like a "sitting duck." I am sorry you feel that way. Perhaps you should take a self-defense class. I cannot understand how taking firearms away from responsible citizens will make you feel safer.

Universal background checks are a direct assault on the Second Amendment. They are a direct violation of citizens' rights. I might suggest universal background checks for letter writers. It would make me feel safer if some people didn't have pencils.
