Linking marriage, tax benefits

July 15, 2013

Regarding "Nature of marriage cannot be redefined" (July 3, Page A-11): Cardinal Donald Wuerl's arguments may have been apropos several hundred thousand years ago. Today the human population is not in danger of extinction. In fact, in a civilized nation people would not be paid to reproduce, but rather would be required to pay for the privilege. The rate of divorce in America is approximately equal to the rate of marriage between a man and a woman.

Marriage is about friendship unions. If the financial benefits for marriage were eliminated, the fuss about marriage would probably evaporate.
