RIVERBANK — About 100 people gathered at Silva Park in Riverbank on Wednesday for a candlelight vigil to celebrate the life of Bruno Diaz, who died Monday when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle.
Most donned white at the request of Bruno's mother, who wanted the gathering not to be a time of mourning but a celebration of her son's life.
Tea candles were displayed to spell Bruno's initials and were circled by larger candles, and a birthday balloon was tied to one.
It was Bruno's 17th birthday when he was hit by a Jeep on Terminal Avenue near Plainview Road at about 4:30 a.m. Monday.
He would have been a junior this fall at Enochs High School.
The 21-year-old driver of the Jeep stopped at the scene, and drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in the accident, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver has not been cited, but the investigation is ongoing.
CHP officer Chuck Leon said Wednesday that investigators are looking for motorists who might have seen Bruno before he was hit. Any motorist who was on Terminal between 4:15 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. on Monday is asked to call the CHP at (209) 545-7440.
