A 23-year-old man died Saturday after a gun he'd been playing with went off, according to Merced County sheriff's deputies.
The shooting happened around 4:15 a.m. in the 10000 block of Golf Link Road, north of Hilmar, according to Deputy Delray Shelton.
The victim, Joshua Michael Johnson, was with two friends when the incident happened. While playing with the gun, Johnson put the gun to his chin and pulled the trigger. Shelton said the gun then went off.
Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Shelton said no one was charged with any crime, and deputies consider the shooting to be accidental.
