Big flames, small fire in south Modesto

— Firefighters from the Modesto Regional and Stanislaus Consolidated fire departments responded to a fire that quickly spread through dry vegetation between Hillside Drive and Santa Cruz Avenue, near Legion Park and the Tuolumne River in south Modesto, about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The cause was not immediately known, but several area residents reported suspicious activities.

Wind pushed the fire through the trees. About 1.5 acres to 2 acres of small trees, trash and underbrush burned before the blaze was contained, said Modesto Regional Battalion Chief Randy Anderson.
