Modesto Nuts thump Bakersfield Blaze 7-2

July 7, 2013

— The Modesto Nuts began Sunday with a loss, but ended it with a 7-2 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Prior to Sunday night's California League baseball contest, the Colorado Rockies fired Nuts manager Lenn Sakata, citing the need to have a manager more supportive of the organization’s player development philosophy.

Development director Fred Nelson led the team from the dugout Sunday night.

Trevor Story and Tyler Gagnon took care of business on the field for the Nuts, with Story homering twice and driving in four runs, and Gagnon pitching eight solid innings. Gagnon (7-7) allowed just three hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking two. Ryan Casteel and Will Swanner also homered for Modesto.

Game 2 of the teams' three-game set is tonight at 7:45.
