What makes a good teacher?

In response to "CSU gets low grades in review" (June 21,Page A-1): Several political, bureaucratically driven entities have snaked their way into schools. A company called "Data Works" walked through classrooms to see how many students were working on grade level. "This student shouldn't be working on this" or "that's not hitting a standard" were just a few things said. Maybe the child was receiving pre-instruction on concepts that must be mastered before moving on. These are people that haven't been in the classroom for 20 years, left the classroom because they couldn't handle it or people who've never taught.

Now, this CSUS review. How many graduates from the program did they interview or observe teaching for a whole school year? Let the teachers teach.

I teach side-by-side with several California State University, Stanislaus, graduates; they are dedicated and energetic. The program is good at CSUS. However, it goes further than that. Any credential program doesn't 100 percent create an exemplary teacher. Rather it supplements a candidate who loves working with children, manages a positive environment and has the respect of students. These characteristics are earned by nature, not nurtured. I want to thank all credential programs for helping us become better teachers.
