There is no app on how to run for public office. Candidates and those thinking about running need to meet and talk to people who have done it.
That's the purpose of a free workshop scheduled July 13, just two days before the filing period opens for the dozens of school board and council seats to be filled in the Nov. 5 election. The session is open to those who might pursue elective office in future years.
The program will be from 8:45 a.m. to noon at the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, 1114 J St. Speakers will talk about walking and knocking on doors, asking for donations, using social media, and preparing for candidate forums and interviews. There will be a primer on the Fair Political Practices financial reporting requirements.
Although the workshop is free, people are asked to sign up by July 10 to assure there are enough handout materials. Make a reservation by contacting the chamber office at (209) 577-5757 or e-mail email@example.com.
The workshop is organized by representatives of the chamber, The Modesto Bee, the Stanislaus County Library and the League of Women Voters of Stanislaus County, and longtime leaders in the Democratic and Republican parties.
